Wilask, name of the horse painted, was born in 1904 in Kentucky and was a brown standard bred. Wilask was painted by F. Beaumont (the painting is signed-it is a little hard to make out the first initial, but we believe it is an F.) about 1904-1911. The painting is in a substantial antique gold leaf frame. The frame is approximately 23" x 27-1/2" and the painting is approximately 18" x 21-1/2" . As you can see from the image, the horse is pictured in a field with a hill in the background. It is very well painted and a hansdsome horse. Typical of antique paintings, there are two small very old patches on the back of the canvas toward the rear of the hourse. It is not noticeable from the front. The painting was acquired from a dealer in horse art and she indicated she acquired it in Cincinnati, just across the state line from Kentucky. So the artist is probably from that region of the country and most probably American.
Wilask won at the Kentucky State Fair in 1911 and the owner received a sterling silver trophy cup made by Whiting, a fine American silver maker. The cup has hallmarks and was made in 1906 with an inscription of the win. |
